More Bad Science At UK Met Office Caused Grounding Of Aircraft

A major row is brewing over the decision to ground flights based on the evidence of a single source of data from a computer model where “certain assumptions” are made when there is no data.

Sound familiar?

The UK Met Office infamous for it’s deep involvement in the Climategate scandal, wildly erroneous predictions about “barbecue summers” and “mild winters” has struck again by getting most flights grounded for the last 4 days.

The Met Office’s Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre issued the warning last week which triggered the European ban on flying.

Earlier a senior European Commission official said Europe should reduce its volcanic ash flight ban to “several dozen kilometres” around Iceland and rethink the Met Office science behind the current no fly restrictions, said a senior today.

Matthias Ruete, the Commission’s director general of transport, criticised national air traffic authorities for relying on a single source of scientific evidence for the four day ban, which has created a major aviation crisis.

“The science behind the model we are running at the moment is based on certain assumptions where we do not have clear scientific evidence,” he said.

“We don’t even know what density the cloud should be in order to affect jet engines. We have a model that runs on mathematical projections.”

“It is probability rather than actual things happening.”

Mr Ruete revealed that the Commission was forced yesterday to intervene with national authorities to “unblock the mess” and to allow airlines to fly test flights to check the VAAC data.

“In a case where, we do not have the data it is a tremendous and terrible responsibility for the authorities to say, ‘oh well go on up’. That is why test flights are so important to have some kind of empirical evidence to help us move on from the mathematical model,” he said.

He said that 40 test flights across Europe had found no evidence of ash in jet engines, windows or lubrication systems that could pick up the dangerous volcanic particles.

“There was no trace of ash at all,” he said.

The Met Office got huge salary increases this year, which after their involvement in Climategate as a primary data source, the mild winter and now causing global problems for the airline industry with another erroneous fear prediction.

The Met Office is not fit for purpose and needs a big shake up starting at the top, what qualification does being a director of the WWF ecomentalist pressure group give you to become Head of the Met Office? But then again a railway engineer heads up the UN IPCC.

  1. Why didn’t the airlines have a say? This volcano could go on
for months or worse if the other one could erupt also.

Another stuff up by the Met Office and one that can cost
not only airlines but people jobs. I read somewhere, some
have blamed climate change on volcanoes and earthquakes.

Wake up volcanoes are a natural event.
