Poland Blocks EU Energy Roadmap 2050

According to Chris Huhne its a “Dark day for Europe” which means that one of his and the EU’s beloved
economic suicide pacts emission targets plans have come to a grinding halt, thanks to Poland.
So what is the EU Energy Roadmap 2050?
On the face of it, it’s yet another Green plan for low a carbon Europe, but as with all things from the Church of Climatology there is far more to it than that, countries will change their borders, or in some cases even disappear as the boundaries of a country are defined by its renewable energy resources.
Architects aren’t typically known for their policy planning and work on climate change, but Rem Koolhaas’s OMA (Office of Metropolitan Architecture) is a bit outside of the box. They recently unveiled a policy report on how Europe can drastically reduce its carbon emissions by 80% before 2050 rolls around. Their plan, developed in part with the Imperial College London, Kema, Mckinsey & Company, and Oxford economics, proposes an EU-wide decarbonized grid and essentially a realignment of the boundary lines according to renewable energy resources. The Roadmap 2050, which was commissioned by the European Climate Foundation, actually provides a practical guide to replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy, but it only works if the whole of Europe works together.
However this architect has the seen the possibility of massive profits by getting in on the Green ecofacist bandwagon, and probably has already been promised a job as Climate Gauleiter in one of the new countries of Solaria.
That map is not a joke these people are deadly serious.
The key phrase in all this being “ it only works if the whole of Europe works together”, and fortunately for all of us the Poles are having none of it.
The European environment suffered a double blow in Luxembourg yesterday as moves to protect both biodiversity – including fisheries – and the climate were scuppered on cost grounds.
One country alone – Poland – blocked progress on the Energy Roadmap 2050, which ministers had hoped would provide certainty and direction for the continent’s climate policy.
The Roadmap calls for a 40% cut in carbon emissions by 2030, a 60% cut by 2040 and an 80% cut by 2050, compared to 1990 levels.
After a meeting of EU environment ministers in Luxembourg yesterday, UK energy secretary Chris Huhne described the mood by saying: “It is a dark day for Europe’s leading role in tackling climate change.”
Janusz Lewandowski, the Polish commissioner in charge of the EU’s €130bn budget, even expressed scepticism over the science of climate change and the future of emissions policy.
We already have overambitious agreements on CO2 emission reduction,” he told a newspaper, adding, “there is a notion that the thesis that coal energy is the main cause of global warming is highly questionable. Moreover, more and more often there is a question mark put over the whole [issue of] global warming as such.”
Poland gets 90% of its electricity from coal.
Lewandowski said the CO2 targets “are too ambitious for the Polish economy … Polish politicians have to persuade people that there cannot be a quick jump away from coal. For Poland it would be a disaster.”
“It is unclear where we go from here,” said a Commission spokesperson. “The Council’s work programme for the next six months will be established by Poland. Today’s result was unexpected.”
Worryingly, Poland is to take charge of the revolving presidency of the EU from 1 July. Jason Anderson of WWF said Poland’s move showed a “shocking disregard for climate protection and economic revitalisation”.
“It’s terrifying that the man in charge of Europe’s budget is someone you might expect to see in Sarah Palin’s Republican party,” added Greenpeace advisor Ruth Davis.
Oh dear, the “P” word, Palin, the eco warrior at Greenpeace is definitely rattled by Poland, but more to the point who actually cares what Greenpeace thinks?
Greenpeace are a NGO, Non Government Organisation, unelected and like the The WWF and Friends of the Earth, funded by vested interests with a political agenda. There is no way that their names should be linked with, or have implied association as credible and honest sources of scientific data.
