‘Side Exit’ For Brize Norton Corteges
Oxfordshire County Council hang your head in shame
A familiar sight as a fallen hero passes through the streets of Wootton Bassett, a soldiers final journey through a sea of respect and sadness.
I stood there, saluting as my friend passed by, draped in our nations flag , I am tensing every muscle, forcing the salute to remain as all i want to do is hide my face as i feel the tears welling up. In an attempt to stop the tears i look around , only to see the crowds around me weeping with heads bowed in respect for our latest fallen warrior.
It hits me like a like train these proud people stood around me are not afraid to show their emotions, their utter respect…. their tears. It is a show of uttmost repect that people can and do show this, but i could not and would not break that salute, I am a soldier but i am not a hero, he is, he is my hero, a national hero, but most of all, he is the biggest hero to his loved ones.
I have wept unmanly tears, but you will never see them, you will only see what was seen that day at Wootton Bassett, strength, to carry on, to remember the fallen, to fight in their name, to make sure that what they died for is not relinquished or surrendered .
The recent news that the county council have announced a new route which is less public and the use of a side exit quite franklyis disgusting, the general public and those at Wooton Bassett gave up their own time and made a personal decision to attend repatriations, they themselves go there of their own free will. The council are now attempting to remove this option to allow people free expression, and also by pushing our heroes out of a ”side exit” show a complete lack of respect and compassion. Their reasoning for this is to not upset people (i.e schools , married quarters) along the present route. this is a feeble excuse, as i am aware that at the request of the families an alternative route is already available, but many choose to allow people to join in the respect of their repatriated loved ones. I believe it is the work of PC do-gooding busy bodies who think they know better than anyone else. To change the route with no choice detracts from some of the many reasons we fight for.
Let there be choice, not the one option dictated by a few, if this decision is forced through then the council is no better than the extremist regimes we fight and lose our lives to……………
