No The Arctic Wont Now Be Ice Free In 2012 But It Might Be By 2030

The map of predictions and what might happen though on current prediction accuracy not likely

Just a few short years ago the Arctic was going to be largely ice free in the summer months by 2012.

Now because global warming is increasing the Arctic could be ice free in the summer from 2030.

The story the world was fed by Obama, Brown, the EU and the UN was imminent Climate Armageddon, so in the true style of warming alarmist junk science the previous erroneous prediction for 12 months time must be ignored and we must all become fearful of the Arctic possibly becoming ice free in 18 years time now.

Sea ice in the Arctic is melting at a record pace this year, suggesting warming at the north pole is speeding up and a largely ice-free Arctic can be expected in summer months within 30 years.

The area of the Arctic ocean at least 15% covered in ice is this week about 8.5m sq kilometres – lower than the previous record low set in 2007 – according to satellite monitoring by the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado. In addition, new data from the University of Washington Polar Science Centre, shows that the thickness of Arctic ice this year is also the lowest on record.

The monitoring of polar ice thickness started in 1980 so the lowest on record is for a data sample of 31 years which is far from a representative data sample, still this is unlikely to bother warming alarmists whose implementation of English means conditional words like “could”,”might” and “predicted”  are interpreted as absolutes.

No warming alarmist predictions have yet come true, many have been revised, discredited or quietly dropped but none as yet have even come remotely close to actually happening.

  1. Science will always have those who’s views are near the extreme, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore all scientists. Less than perfect knowledge isn’t the same as no knowledge.
The consensus view (and a simply quadratic regression of measured data agrees) indicates a mostly ice-free (< 20% of Arctic region) September somewhere between 2015 and 2025.
32 years of data points (1979 – 2011) is statistically sufficient to project 15 years into the future with reasonable confidence.
