Japanese Government Halts Subsidies For Wind Farms

The Divine Wind of Green subsidy has ceased to blow in Japan

The global decline in prohibitively expensive Green renewable energy continues with the news that the Japanese Government is putting a stop to the Green taxation that allowed wind farms to exist in Japan.

In the last 12 months just 33 bird choppers have been added to the Japanese grid:

Japan’s wind power installations for the year ending in March will decline 68 percent after the government halted a program that provided subsidies for clean energy projects, an industry association said.

The country will add 33 turbines generating 82 megawatts of wind power for the year ending March, according to an estimate by the Japan Wind Power Association released today. For the year ended March 2011, Japan installed 256 megawatts.

Japan stopped direct subsidies in 2010 that paid for a third of the cost of renewable energy projects as the country planned a shift to an incentive payment program, Takao Hanaoka, a spokesman for the association, said by phone today

Following the tsunami Japan has shutdown many of its reactors for checks, it was hoped that renewables would provide a stop gap solution while the nuclear reactors are shut down.

How expensive and unreliable renewable energy can fill this energy gap remains to be seen, maybe the wind in Japan is truly Divine and unlike the rest of the world blows in synchronisation with consumer demand.

Then again, maybe not.
