Connie Hedegaard – Wrong Again This Time On Extreme Weather

Comrade Connie gets it wrong again by jumping on the warming alarmist event attribution bandwagon

The EU’s unelected Climate Commissar Connie Hedegaard is at it again, pushing fear stories of extreme weather events, naturally caused by Anthropogenic Global Warming of course.

This is the Green silly season, the run up to a UN COP meeting which always sees a massive increase of Green doom and gloom predictions, historically none of which have ever come true thus far.

Hedegaard it is worth remembering was responsible for hosting and preparing COP Climategate 15 before being appointed EU Climate Commissar, so she is hardly impartial when it comes to pushing the Global Agrarian Society.

In warming alarmist reality, Global Warming is the cause for just about everything that has ever happened or will ever happen, event attribution to give it’s name and it is a very popular tool in promoting the political science of Climate Change.

Event Attribution makes even IPCC lead authors despair, IPCC Lead Author Myles Allen had this to say about Al Gore and event attribution:

When Al Gore said last week that scientists now have “clear proof that climate change is directly responsible for the extreme and devastating floods, storms and droughts that displaced millions of people this year,” my heart sank.

When a warmist scientist like Allen says event attribution is dangerous, and very difficult to prove, you would be forgiven for thinking that the political propaganda machine for Big Green would take the hint and leave it alone, but remember this is all about “science” that backs a political agenda.

Comrade Connie in the Grauniad:

In short, climate change and weather extremes are not about a distant future. Formerly one-off extreme weather episodes seem to be becoming the new normal. Weather extremes are not that extreme any more. Heatwaves, floods, droughts and wildfires are the new reality of an ever warming world.

And this should not come as a surprise. Scientists have been warning for years that as the planet heats up, we will have to deal with more severe, more changeable, more unpredictable weather. The evidence is mounting that human-caused warming is pushing normal warming effects to extremes. Heatwaves have increased in duration and frequency. Some parts of Europe are now gripped by severe water shortages while other parts have suffered extreme precipitations causing floods and increased crop losses.

And although not every extreme weather event can be attributed to climate change, scientists are now much more confident about linking individual weather events to climate change. Take 2011’s record warm November in the UK, the second hottest on record. Researchers say that it was at least 60 times more likely to happen because of climate change than because of natural variations in the earth’s weather systems.

A warm November in Britain is granted a rare event, but hardly an earth shattering climate catastrophe.

This summer continued the pattern. The retreat of sea ice in the Arctic smashed the previous record, with just half the ice present compared to when satellite measurement began in 1979. Or take another example: Greenland’s July thaw, where satellite data showed that about 97% of the massive ice sheet surface covering the island was melting. “Was this real or was it due to a data error?” a Nasa scientist questioned. Unfortunately, the data was correct.

The retreat of Arctic sea ice was caused by a cyclone as this video clip from NASA shows:

The unprecedented 97% melt of the Greenland ice, was natural surface melt, nothing more if this process did not happen then by now the ice sheet would be higher than Mount Everest, and ever growing.

Perhaps Connie Hedegaard, Al Gore and the legions of other eco zealots should have listened to their scientists when they warned them of the perils of event attribution:

Today’s issue of the journal Nature contains a landmark editorial that reigns back from such extreme talk. Contradicting the IPCC it says that the science is too immature to attribute individual events to climate change. In essence the Nature Editorial says that the standard of proof accepted by some scientists would not be good enough for the courts.

When a warmist journal like Nature, that has continually pushed warming alarmist propaganda backs off of, event attribution because the science is too immature to be worth anything, and scientists like Myles Allen, have reached the same conclusion as Nature, then hysterical Green fear outbursts from Connie Hedegaard are nothing more than Green political rhetoric with little if any scientific credibility.

  1. Last year I put together this analysis of extreme weather in 1971 (being 40 years earlier than 2011, not because it was a “bad” year.)

I have still found nobody that can show that 2011 was worse, or for that matter any recent year.

  2. do you actually ever have anything to say or are ALL your posts just boring strings of hyperbole and other peoples’ quotes? it’s funny how you accuse everyone else of hysteria and rhetoric and yet that’s pretty much ENTIRELY what you print… no intelligent arguments, no convincing analyses, just a bunch of irrelevant nonsense like: “In warming alarmist reality, Global Warming is the cause for just about everything that has ever happened or will ever happen…”

although i’m not sure why i’m inquiring – it’s obvious from the comments of the 2-3 clowns who actually read this site that your audience couldn’t distinguish a seriously considered argument from the latest news about paris hilton…

hang it up, silly little teabagger. this blog – much like YOU, is going NOWHERE.
