Green Philosopher – Plants Have Rights As Well
Remember the Guardian (August 2011) and the aliens watching the obscene levels of CO2 being emitted by us carbon based bipedal life forms?
“Green” aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. “These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets,” the authors write.
An absolute classic of ludicrousness if there ever were one, however Michael Marder has gone one better with Plants Rights, which is a spin off of the Animal Rights movement:
Plants have rights too, they say, and we ought to “reconsider our ethical approach to eating them.” Michael Marder, a philosopher writing recently for the New York Times, bases a call for “plant liberation” on the idea that plants possess a primitive form of “awareness,” in that they have a capacity to react to certain stimuli, and that they engage in a simple form of biochemical communication, through the release of chemical hormones that can send signals to other nearby plants.
By now the vegans must be getting worried, starvation beckons for their fossil fuelled Green way of life, it is strange the way that vegans never mind vegetables being flow half way around the world so they can get their food stuffs in the depths of winter.
But never fear zucchini munchers it is still OK to eat some plants:
It is especially pernicious to grow plants from sterile seeds, already robbed of their reproductive potential, patented and appropriated by profit-driven enterprises. Not only do these agricultural “innovations” harm farmers, who are forced to buy seeds from multinational corporations, but they also violate the capacity for reproduction at the core of the Aristotelian vegetal soul.
Providing of course that the plants being eaten are not GM crops.
Michael Marder is typical of the left wing anti everything environmentalist who will use any argument no matter how spurious, to further their cause, this case only politically correct plants can be eaten.
