Britain’s Storms And Green Political Opportunism
The severe weather events hitting Britain at the moment were always going to be grabbed by the warming alarmists as conclusive proof that man made climate change was the root cause.
As usual the warmists quote the UN IPCC report when it suits their argument, and then completely ignore their “science” when it does not match the current and ever changing political narrative.
Like for example the “low confidence” that the IPCC has in attributing extreme weather events to Anthropogenic Global Warming:
“Overall, the most robust global changes in climate extremes are seen in measures of daily temperature, including to some extent, heat waves. Precipitation extremes also appear to be increasing, but there is large spatial variability”
“There is limited evidence of changes in extremes associated with other climate variables since the mid-20th century”
“Current datasets indicate no significant observed trends in global tropical cyclone frequency over the past century … No robust trends in annual numbers of tropical storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes counts have been identified over the past 100 years in the North Atlantic basin”
“In summary, there continues to be a lack of evidence and thus low confidence regarding the sign of trend in the magnitude and/or frequency of floods on a global scale”
“In summary, there is low confidence in observed trends in small-scale severe weather phenomena such as hail and thunderstorms because of historical data inhomogeneities and inadequacies in monitoring systems”
“In summary, the current assessment concludes that there is not enough evidence at present to suggest more than low confidence in a global-scale observed trend in drought or dryness (lack of rainfall) since the middle of the 20th century due to lack of direct observations, geographical inconsistencies in the trends, and dependencies of inferred trends on the index choice. Based on updated studies, AR4 conclusions regarding global increasing trends in drought since the 1970s were probably overstated. However, it is likely that the frequency and intensity of drought has increased in the Mediterranean and West Africa and decreased in central North America and north-west Australia since 1950”
“In summary, confidence in large scale changes in the intensity of extreme extratropical cyclones since 1900 is low”
The direct opposite to what the political wing of Big Green is saying, words like “low confidence” and the preceding report AR4 “over stated“, the IPCC’s brief is to only look at human influence on climate change, and when they have low confidence, it is a cert that the link is so tenuous that it cannot be spun as climate science.
Then you get the UK Met Office’s chief scientist Dame Julia Slingo muttering darkly about her suspicions that AGW is causing the storms and flooding, contradicting a report by the Met Office.
Now a Met Office scientist and IPCC lead author has contradicted Slingo:
One of the Met Office’s most senior experts yesterday made a dramatic intervention in the climate change debate by insisting there is no link between the storms that have battered Britain and global warming.
Mat Collins, a Professor in climate systems at Exeter University, said the storms have been driven by the jet stream – the high-speed current of air that girdles the globe – which has been ‘stuck’ further south than usual.
Professor Collins told The Mail on Sunday: ‘There is no evidence that global warming can cause the jet stream to get stuck in the way it has this winter. If this is due to climate change, it is outside our knowledge.’
Collins follows the IPCC low confidence conclusion, which is a major embarassment for Slingo and other warming alarmist standard bearers like Britain’s climate change fool, Liberal Democrat Ed Davey:
Amid growing warnings about a potential link between global warming and extreme UK weather, Ed Davey will raise concerns that the politicial consensus about the need to tackle climate change is in danger of breaking down as some in the Conservative and Ukip parties try to discredit the science.
He will say that the actions of climate deniers are “undermining public trust in the scientific evidence for climate change” and that “we can see around us today the possible consequences of a world in which extreme weather events are much more likely“.
The IPCC disagree with Davey, who must be aware of what is in AR5 as he quotes from it with monotonous regularity, ergo the man is either a fool or a liar.
On this occasion however, Davey is surpassed in his foolishness by none other than Labour Party Leader and devout warming alarmist Ed Miliband who really goes for broke:
Criticising David Cameron for appearing to backtrack on his commitment to the environmental cause, he calls on senior figures in all parties to unite behind the scientific evidence that climate change is a key factor in extreme weather. Failure to do so, he warns, will have catastrophic consequences.
Miliband says the science on the issue is now overwhelming, citing the government’s own special representative on climate change, Sir David King, who recently warned: “Storms and severe weather conditions that we might have expected to occur once in 100 years in the past may now be happening more frequently and the reason is … that the climate is changing.”
The scientific evidence is that there is no scientific evidence to support Miliband’s case whatsoever, and what King said is based on conditionals such as might and may, conditionals, effectively King saying “We just don’t know“.
With a spectacular record of failed predictions of Green Armageddon the warming alarmists are trying to grab any weather event as proof of their failed theory of man made climate change.
