The Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise has been towed into the northern Russian port of Murmansk, and all 30 activists have been charged with piracy by the Russian authorities.
The story is still breaking so is there is a certain amount of variance between the reports coming in.
Russia filed piracy charges Tuesday against Greenpeace activists who tried to climb onto an offshore drilling platform in the Arctic owned by the state-controlled gas company Gazprom.
The activists are on a Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, which was seized last week by the Russian Coast Guard and towed Tuesday into a port near Murmansk.
It was unclear how many of the 30 activists on board face piracy charges, which carry a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of 500,000 rubles (about $15,500). The Investigative Committee, Russia’s federal investigative agency, said it would question all those who participated in the protest and detain the “more active” among them.
The story of Greenpeace’s major miscalculation in boarding a Russian oil rig has dropped off the news in most western MSM outlets, however the story is still very much alive and kicking.
Greenpeace’s ship Arctic Sunrise is currently under tow by a Russian tugboat after the ship’s captain refused to steer the ship, and is due to dock in the northern Russian port of Murmansk sometime on Tuesday, after bad weather allegedly caused the tug to slow down.
The crew of the Arctic Sunrise is under arrest in the mess room of the ship and all 30 activists including 4 Russian nationals have been held incommunicado ever since they were arrested.
The future, or lack of future, for the Green activists appears to be in the hands of a little known organization called the Investigative Committee: Read the rest of this entry
About a month ago Greenpeace went head to head with the Russian Coastguard, after being refused a permit to enter Russia’s Northern Sea Route, Greenpeace went anyway.
The Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise was boarded by 4 Russian Coast Guard officers who subjected the ship and its crew to a lengthy inspection, during the course of which the Captain of the Coast Guard ship told the Arctic Sunrise to leave the area immediately or strict measures would be used. For strict measures read the threat to open fire on the Greenpeace ship with real live ammunition, starting with a shot across the bows and if that didn’t work then incoming would be the order of the day.
The Arctic Sunrise slunk away, Green tail between its legs only to reappear today in the Pechora Sea off the northern coast of Russia with the intent of boarding the Prirazlomnaya rig, in a repeat of last years occupation protesting about drilling for oil in the Arctic. Read the rest of this entry
Greenpeace have just made a massive miscalculation of who to mess with in the Arctic, in this case Russia.
The story goes like this Greenpeace wanted to go the Northern Sea Route in Russia’s Arctic and protest, for that read, interrupt the search for oil and gas in the Arctic, the Arctic is reckoned to have 13% of the worlds undiscovered oil reserves and around 31% of the worlds undiscovered natural gas reserves.
Entry to the Northern Sea Route is by permit only, Greenpeace applied 3 times, and 3 times the Russians rejected the application, so the nobly motivated watermelons at Greenpeace decided they would ignore the lack of permit and go anyway.
A major miscalculation by Greenpeace, the old USSR might be gone, but the new Russia led by Comrade Putin is little changed from the USSR, now instead of the KGB, there are the incredibly rich oligarchs and Gazprom pulling the strings behind the scenes, with same the ruthlessness that the KGB once did. Democracy and free democratic protest is an anathema to Russians used to centuries of despotic rule by the Czars and 70 years of communist tyranny, and the sort of praise that Greenpeace gets in the west from fawning Liberal politicians is never going to happen in Russia. A new survey by Globescan of 22,812 people in 22 countries, including Britain and the US makes depressing reading for Big Green, fear of CO2 is at a 20 year low, and this is despite billions of dollars being wasted on junk science projects with a preordained political result, and all gilded with never ending fear stories about impending environmental holocaust.
Ever since the failure of COP15 Copenhagen, in 2009 the whole warming alarmist movement has been in accelerating decline, each successive COP meeting building on the failure of its predecessor, attempts of reignite the Rio Earth summit some 20 years later, with a new meme “sustainable development” crashed and burned on take off.
Now the warming alarmists are at a loss to understand how this could be, after all that money, all that fear based Green propaganda, all those ad hominem attacks and straw man arguments, the world no longer buys in to the Anthropogenic Global Warming boondoggle. Read the rest of this entry
COP18 was even by the standards of the UNFCCC, a spectacular failure, the delegates left Doha without any of the major emitters making a new pledge to cut the CO2 emissions.
There never were high expectations of COP18 producing a new binding agreement, but those attending were expecting some progress.
Instead they got absolutely nothing, and now the Green warming alarmists are in despair, no matter how loud or often they cry “Wolf”, no one listens any more: Read the rest of this entry
Legend has it that a Banshee is a fairy woman who starts to wail when someone is about die, the Banshee legend is found in many cultures from Gaelic to Norse and American folklore.
With COP18 due to finish tomorrow and no positive outcome for the warmists in sight, a coalition of Green NGOs including the usual suspects of Greenpeace, WWF, FoE and Oxfam have joined together to wail loudly about the lack of progress at COP18, when in reality their wailing is for the death of the Great Man Made Global Warming scam. The Dash for Gas picked up speed today with the news that Britain is build 20 new gas fired power stations which will add 20GW of generating capacity to the national grid.
The statement from Climate Change secretary Ed Davey has upset Greenpeace who have started moaning about something called Carbon Targets being unattainable, Carbon Targets used to be the approved Green way of de-industrialising western civilisation until the term fell into disuse in mainstream politics.
