After an absence of a few months Gordon Brown and Labour’s smears and lies machine is in full mobilisation again, and as usual the target is a woman, in this case Conservative PPC Adeela Shafi.
A reasonable person would be forgiven for thinking that following on from Smeargate and the legal action against Gordon Brown’s personally hired pit viper Damian McBride, Labour would have learnt it’s lesson about making unfounded allegations.
During the Labour Party Conference there was speculation about the “Glorious return of Damian McBride“, though the use of glorious and McBride is the same sentence does smack of the oxymoron.
Consider the evidence: Conservative female politician, unfounded lies and smears, a well orchestrated campaign, there is a distinct whiff of grubby pit living here.
Gordon Brown and the Labour Party’s latest lies and smears campaign is being spearheaded by the Daily Mirror who in another display of the worst form of journalism have printed half truths and unresearched lies about Adeela Shafi.
Firstly the Mirror was tipped off by Labour HQ’s opposition research bods, Labour can’t afford much but they sure as hell are bringing in the dark artists. Labour bloggers and twitter users have confirmed to TB that they were tipped off by Victoria Street and asked to heavily promote the story. Cough. The whole day will then end in a phonebanking session for Kerry run directly out of Labour’s Victoria Street HQ.
The Mirror piece is an extremely lazy piece of journalism.
So here’s the problem – at this point there’s no evidence that Adeela Shafi owes a penny, but there’s a very clear implication from the Mirror that she owes £324,272. I’ve set out above why I think all the Mirror has is a CCJ register search – which can’t support that implication. You can defame by implication, of course, and an implication that someone has failed to pay a substantial amount despite a judgement is plainly defamatory.
Hat tip to Tory Bear
2009 has been Gordon Brown’s annus horribilis (yes there is probably a Mandelchump joke in there) the financial saviour of the world could not save his own country, as the financial predictions of Brown and Darling were proved not only wrong, but so wide of the mark as to be laughable.
The scandal of MP’s expenses exploded in to the news courtesy of the Telegraph, and continues to cause massive tidal waves with today’s news that the Met Police have sent 2 further files on MP’s to the Crown Prosecution Service, making a total of 6 MPs and Lords in the frame. The expenses scandal initially reflected badly on the Government and Gorbals Mick the speaker, then backfired on Gordon Brown as he has had to pay back more money he should not have claimed.
The things claimed have verged from the ridiculous to fraud for non-existent mortgages, there will doubtless be some sacrificial lambs next year to satisfy the blood lust of voters rightly incensed over the abuse of taxpayers money by people they trusted.
The rising number of casualties in Afghanistan, the shortage of helicopters, equipment and funding blew up and did Brown, Ainsworth and Labour no favours.
Gordon Brown’s inability to admit there will have to be cuts in spending, the infamous 10% Tory cuts smear when government departments were preparing 20% cuts, 50% income tax and the resumption of class war and politics of envy have all failed to resonate with the public.
Then there was the slow motion car crash of the Labour party conference, the Sun pulling the plug on Labour support and Mandelson redefining the meaning of “Chump”. Read the rest of this entry

Since Hugh’s post this little gem has appeared on Gudio’s site
Tony Blair told his dinner guests, now smeared by David Miliband and other Labour politicians as homophobes and neo-Nazis, that
“First of all can I welcome the new Prime Minister of Poland here very warmly indeed and say we are delighted to see you here in Downing Street… The relationship between Poland and Britain (is) a very strong relationship founded on a shared history and also shared values and this close co-operation lives on today through the work we are doing in the European Union together.”
Updated… Hague’s article in the Mail clearly demonstrates just why Millichump is unfit to be Foreign Secretary, of …well…anywhere.

Earlier on today we blogged about the possible glorious return of Damain McBride to the Labour Party’s smear and lies machine.
Latest news looks like there could be more than a grain of truth in this.
Deputy Labour Leader Harriet Harman in her speech today made references to David Cameron giving fox hunting to everyone, following on from this class war howler, she turned on George Osborne and said “He would do away with Surestart and replace it with a lap dancing club in every community”
Georger Osborne was a target for sex smears in the Labour Smeargate campaign orchestrated by Draper, Collins and McBride.
Harman is now trying to write this off as a joke, but consider this you are deputy leader of a party that has been abandoned by a newspaper that has supported you for 12 years, Leader’s make or break speech “Gulags for Slags” has crashed and burned, and even the grand dame of Labour propaganda Tuscan property magnate Polly Toynbee says it’s all over.
What have Harman and Labour got left to lose?

Maybe those left wing hacks at The Gruaniad didn’t take too kindly to Gordon breaking bread with those nasty baby eaters at The Telegraph, the stories appearing since Leader’s coma inducing speech today, have not really been that positive.
Firstly there was the truth behind the ID card shame that HJ has already blogged on
Then this lttle gem got dug up in The Guardian, yet again:
“Ergo Labour falling the wrong side of the tribalist/pluralist divide I wrote about yesterday, precious little movement on the fashionable issue of reinventing the state, and the glorious return of Damian McBride (possibly). Thinktank-man was depressed at the prospect. I can’t say I blame him.” more from John Harris
All three of the editors at Tory A have already been subjected to lies and smears – the usual paedophile references, and we are proud to announce that this blog has also been referred to as obscene. I will admit the odd typo does slip through, but obscene?
They do say the only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about.

The biggest political story since Watergate?
Possibly but the major coup by The Telegraph on the MP’s expenses scandal is now turning into a fascinating story in its own right.
A book Called No Expenses Spared is published tomorrow.
“How soldiers’ fury helped lead the Telegraph to its great exclusive” from Telegraph Blogs Editor Damian Thompson
Brown, various defence ministers and Brown’s government have sold the armed forces short, and it is widely recognised that the Government have broken the military covenant.
From cutting the defence budget while we were fighting in both Iraq and Afghanistan, to lying to the country about the equipment our brave soldiers have, Brown and his shower have behaved shamefully.
When the Generals spoke out, they were subjected to the very best lies and smear campaign from the blueprint of Draper, Collins and McBride.
The storm that followed this finally forced “Working Class” Bob Ainsworth to order his weasles to stop smearing General Dannatt, this however did not stop Gordon Brown from personally blocking the Generals promotion to Chief of the Defence Staff. The country has lost a very capable and respected officer because of the vanity of Gordon Brown and his Labour Government, the armed forces a respected and skilled champion.
Aardvark believes in Karma, and in The Telegraph “MPs’ expenses details were leaked by a mole who was angry about the Government’s failure to properly equip Britain’s armed forces while politicians spent millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money on themselves.” by the authors of the book is proof that what went around came back.
Gordon Brown and his hand picked attack dogs, Derek Draper and Damian McBride along with Labour Party General Secretary, represent all that is odious and grubby in British Politics today.
Hand picked by Gordon Brown, and working from an office right next door to his Leader, McBride conducted a smear campaign against not only opposition MP’s, but Labour MP’s as well.
No one was safe from McBride, no thought or smear was too low for this employee of the Labour party.
You would think that smearing a grieving husband and wife, who had just lost a child, would be a no no. You would be wrong, nothing is too low, or sacrosanct, to a dedicated Labour attack dog.
Borrowing from his Leader’s idea that women are entertainment meat, he then smeared Conservative MP Nadine Dorries, as someone who slept around. What a nice man.
This week it all went badly wrong for McBride and Draper as they were served with Court Papers; as was 10 Downing Street a day later.
Ardvaark really enjoyed this and can’t wait for the Court Cases start as there will be lots of prime blogging stories coming out of this. Well done to Gudio for serving the papers on McBride personally, I bet that felt good.
Enjoy a brief rerun of the downfall of McBride and the fallout for Labour.
Labour’s standing in the polls has been ever downward since this story broke.
So How Far Up the Labour Chain of Command does Smeargate go?
All the way to the top, is the answer.
Who employed McBride? Gordon Brown
Labour’s General Secretary Ray Collins chaired a secret meeting to create the Red Rag website writes Ian Kirby in the News of the World
The email’s existence links the dirty tricks site to the very TOP of the Labour Party. And it exposes the LIE, put out by Downing Street, and repeated by government ministers this week, that the smears project was just a minor aberration cooked up by a couple of renegades acting alone—and which would never have seen light of day.The new email, written by Labour’s then internet campaign chief Derek Draper, PROVES that the meeting took place, reveals WHO was there, WHERE it was held and WHAT was on the agenda. It shows that Collins travelled across Westminster for a summit in the offices of trade union bigwig Charlie Whelan. Whelan, one of Gordon Brown’s closest friends and his former chief spin doctor, was described last night by a Labour insider as the Prime Minister’s “unofficial Mr Fix-It”. read more from The News of The World
The Guardian had this to say:
“Smeargate will come to be seen as a landmark in political communications. It will go down as the moment when the new order of media operators subverted the establishment – the moment when a maverick blogger, Paul Staines, AKA Guido Fawkes, in effect took the scalp of Gordon Brown’s long-established press adviser”
If Ardvaark had a cap, there would be copious doffing in the direction of Guido, well done that man, the first McBride of the season!
Caught out and still falling short of an apology Gordon Brown writes letters of regret, that he and Labour have been caught out, but still fails to apologise. Michael Lea in The Mail
So has there been a price to pay for Labour for all this?
Oh joy of joys Yes
And for those who still argue that it’s the economy then how come that the Tories lost power on May 1st 1997?
Labour died 3rd June 2010
